If you switched to Linux in the last few years and got told “you can’t play games on it”, that advice is now five years out of date. Between native Linux ports, Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, and the Steam Deck ecosystem, the modern Linux desktop can run somewhere between 70% and 90% of the top Steam library — and a smaller, hand-picked list of native-Linux games has never been better. This article is that hand-picked list, plus the context you need to know what you’re getting into.

The convention I use below:

  • Native = the developer ships a Linux ELF binary. No translation, no Proton, no performance penalty.
  • Platinum = ProtonDB community rating “Platinum”, meaning it works out of the box with Steam Play.
  • Gold = works with minor tweaks documented on ProtonDB.

Both Native and Platinum will Just Work. Gold is fine if you’re willing to spend five minutes on the ProtonDB page.

How we got here (60-second version)

The Linux gaming story has three chapters:

  1. The dark ages (2003–2013): a few ports, lots of native indie games on Humble Bundle, almost no AAA. Most Linux users dual-booted Windows for games.
  2. The Steam Linux push (2013–2018): Valve releases Steam for Linux, launches SteamOS, and starts pushing developers to ship native ports. A handful of indie hits land natively (Fez, Axiom Verge, Rocket League), but AAAs stay Windows-first.
  3. Proton + Steam Deck (2018–present): Valve forks Wine into Proton, ships it as part of Steam, and integrates it so deeply that “run this Windows game on Linux” becomes a single checkbox in the launcher. Steam Deck ships in 2022 with Proton as its foundation. By 2026, over 80% of the top 1000 Steam games are rated Gold or better on ProtonDB.

The end result: in 2026, native Linux + Proton covers essentially every single-player game you’d want to play, with a short list of multiplayer titles blocked by anti-cheat (see the end of this article).

The list

I split the picks into Native (the gold standard) and Proton-Platinum (Windows games that work flawlessly through Steam Play). A few games show up in both lists because they’re famous enough that I want to be sure you don’t miss them.

Native Linux titles

These are games the developers shipped with a Linux build. No translation, no Proton overhead, no fiddling.

Hollow Knight

A hand-drawn Metroidvania about a small knight exploring a fallen bug kingdom. Six hundred hours of content if you want to 100% it, thirty hours if you just want to see the main story. Tight combat, atmospheric exploration, and one of the best soundtracks of the decade.

  • Type: Native Linux
  • Why it runs great on Linux: built with Unity, the developers shipped a Linux build in 2017 and have kept it stable ever since. Steam Deck Verified.
  • Average playtime: 35–50 hours for the main + DLC content.

Stardew Valley

The farming-life sim that took the world by storm in 2016 and never stopped selling. You inherit a farm, plant crops, raise animals, mine, fish, romance the neighbors, and slowly turn a rundown plot into a thriving homestead. Single-player, no multiplayer drama, ideal for one-hour sessions.

  • Type: Native Linux
  • Why it runs great on Linux: built with C#/MonoGame, ConcernedApe ships native Linux builds with every update. Runs on basically anything.
  • Average playtime: this is the dangerous one — people report 200–800 hours easily.

Dead Cells

A roguelike Metroidvania with the pace of a fighting game. Each run is 20–40 minutes, every death teaches you something new, and the build variety (weapons + mutations + scrolls) keeps it fresh for hundreds of hours.

Celeste

FTL: Faster Than Light

A spaceship roguelike. You’re the captain of a small ship trying to deliver a message across a hostile galaxy. Each jump is a procedurally-generated encounter; each decision (attack, flee, negotiate) is permanent. Lacerated by Captain Kirk’s famous “risk is our business” speech.

RimWorld

A colony sim where you manage crash-landed survivors on a procedurally-generated planet. The game tells stories — happy ones, tragic ones, weird ones — based on how your colonists’ traits interact with random events. Multi-year campaigns are the norm.

  • Type: Native Linux (since 2018)

Factorio

The factory-building game that ate a year of your life and you thanked it for doing so. Build increasingly complex production lines on an alien planet, automate everything, and launch a rocket to win (or never win and just keep optimizing). The bite-sized modding ecosystem via the in-game mod portal is the cleanest of any game on this list.

Oxygen Not Included

A colony sim from Klei (the Don’t Starve team) about managing a duplicant crew inside an asteroid. Three resources to keep balanced (oxygen, food, temperature), one resource to never run out of (problems). Steam Deck Verified.

Proton Platinum titles

These are Windows-only games that Valve’s Proton layer translates to Linux on the fly. Proton is built on Wine + DXVK + VKD3D-Proton — Wine translates the Windows API calls, DXVK translates Direct3D 9/10/11 to Vulkan, VKD3D translates Direct3D 12 to Vulkan. The result is often within 5–10% of native Windows performance.

Baldur’s Gate 3

The 2023 Game of the Year. A turn-based RPG based on Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, set in the Forgotten Realms 120 years after the events of BG2. You build a party of up to four characters, explore a massive open world, and your choices genuinely change the story across three acts.

  • Steam App ID: 1086940
  • Type: Proton Platinum (works with Proton Experimental / 9.x)
  • Linux performance: usually within 5% of Windows on equivalent hardware. Steam Deck Verified with a locked 30 fps cap.
  • Note: has a native macOS port but no native Linux build; Larian has not announced plans for one.

Elden Ring

FromSoftware’s 2022 open-world masterpiece. A vast, dark fantasy world to explore, hundreds of bosses to fight, a magic system that lets you mix and match spells freely. The Linux port via Proton is so good it routinely beats the Windows version in benchmarks because DXVK’s Vulkan backend is more efficient than DirectX 12.

  • Type: Proton Platinum
  • Linux performance: often slightly faster on Linux than on Windows due to DXVK’s more efficient shader compilation. Steam Deck Verified at 30/40 fps.

Cyberpunk 2077

After three years of updates, Cyberpunk 2077 is finally the game CD Projekt Red promised at launch. Night City is a dense, vertical open world; the main story and side stories are some of the best in the genre. Plays great on Linux through Proton.

  • Linux performance: roughly 90–95% of native Windows on equivalent hardware. Steam Deck Verified for the base game; Phantom Liberty DLC is also fine.

Hades

Supergiant’s roguelike where you play Zagreus, son of Hades, trying to escape the underworld. The combat is tight, the art is gorgeous, the story is told through NPC dialogue that advances every run (so failure is meaningful), and the relationship system is one of the best ever written. Probably the best-reviewed game of 2020.

  • Type: Proton Platinum
  • Linux performance: locked 60 fps or 144 fps depending on your hardware, basically no overhead from Proton.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar’s 2018 open-world Western. Arthur Morgan’s story across the closing days of the Van der Linde gang. One of the most detailed open worlds ever built, with weather, animal ecosystems, random encounters, and a main story that doesn’t waste a frame.

  • Steam App ID: 1918120
  • Type: Proton Platinum
  • Linux performance: 80–95% of Windows depending on your GPU and Proton version. Steam Deck Verified at 30 fps with FSR upscaling.

Baldur’s Gate 3 — yes, it’s listed twice, it earned it

(Already covered above. Worth repeating: this is the most-played single-player RPG on Steam in 2024–2025, and it works perfectly on Linux.)

Honorable mentions (Gold tier — works with minor tweaks)

These games work on Linux through Proton but need a few minutes of configuration. Usually it’s a specific Proton version, sometimes a launch option. Check ProtonDB for the exact recipe.

  • The Witcher 3 — Proton Gold, occasional stutter on shader compilation.
  • GTA V — Proton Gold, Rockstar Launcher sometimes requires PROTON_USE_WINED3D=0 to fix online.
  • Hogwarts Legacy — Proton Gold, very GPU-heavy.
  • Forza Horizon 5 — Proton Gold, controller + force feedback need extra setup with the Steam Input wheel layer.
  • Starfield — Proton Gold, very heavy; needs Proton 9.x or newer.

What still doesn’t work in 2026

A short list of games that are still blocked, mostly because of publisher policies on anti-cheat:

  • Valorant — Riot’s Vanguard anti-cheat explicitly blocks Wine/Proton at the kernel-driver level.
  • Destiny 2 — Bungie chose not to support Wine/Proton.
  • Fortnite — Epic’s Easy Anti-Cheat doesn’t whitelist Proton for this title.
  • Rainbow Six Siege — Ubisoft’s BattlEye implementation rejects Proton.
  • Genshin Impact — miHoYo’s kernel anti-cheat blocks Wine.

For all five, the practical answer in 2026 is still dual-boot Windows. The ProtonDB pages for each of these have long community threads confirming the block is intentional, not a bug. Don’t expect them to be fixed.

How to actually launch a Proton game

If a game is Platinum or Gold on ProtonDB, here’s the recipe:

  1. Install Steam on your distro (steps in the Celeste article).
  2. Steam → Settings → Compatibility: enable both “Enable Steam Play for supported titles” and “Enable Steam Play for all other titles”. Pick Proton Experimental as the default.
  3. Install the game. Steam will detect that it’s Windows-only and automatically use Proton to launch it.
  4. If the game has issues, open ProtonDB → search for the game → look at the “Best Reported Settings” section. You’ll usually find a specific Proton version (GE-Proton9-7 is a popular community build) or a launch option like PROTON_USE_WINED3D=0 that fixes whatever’s wrong.
  5. For Gold games, install ProtonUp-Qt to manage community Proton builds like Proton-GE (GloriousEggroll’s fork, which adds patches for things like FSR upscaling, ultrawide resolution fixes, and Denuvo bypasses).

Distros that make this easier

You can play games on any Linux distro, but these three have the least friction:

  • SteamOS (the Steam Deck’s distro, also installable on a regular PC) — comes with everything preconfigured. If you have Steam Deck-like hardware or want a console-style experience, this is the path of least resistance.
  • Nobara Linux — Fedora with gaming patches pre-applied (NVIDIA drivers, kernel tweaks, OBS Studio with hardware encoding, gaming-focused defaults). Maintained by GloriousEggroll (the same person who maintains Proton-GE).
  • Pop!_OS — Ubuntu-based, ships a separate ISO with NVIDIA proprietary drivers, has good gaming support out of the box. The “System76” angle means the developers care about hardware compatibility.

Arch, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, openSUSE — they all work. The three above just reduce the amount of manual configuration.

The bottom line

Linux gaming in 2026 is not the compromise it was in 2016. If your library is single-player heavy, you can switch to Linux tomorrow, install Steam, enable Proton, and play 90% of what you want to play with no more effort than you put in on Windows. The 10% gap is the multiplayer games blocked by anti-cheat, and for that subset, dual-boot is still the honest answer.

If your library is only competitive multiplayer, Linux is not your platform yet, and that’s not a problem you can solve with cleverness — it’s a publisher decision. Keep Windows for those titles, use Linux for everything else.

For everyone else, the install path is short, the games are great, and the list above is a solid starting point. Pick one, install it tonight, and stop treating your Linux desktop as a work-only machine.
